I-MED expands remote MRI Services in Queensland
In a significant advancement for healthcare accessibility, I-MED Radiology Network has launched remote MRI services at Rockhampton Mater Hospital.
In response to a nationwide and regional shortage of radiologists, I-MED commenced a successful pilot program in February this year, testing innovative technology that connects MRI machines in regional or remote areas to a location managed by technicians.
The Queensland cockpit is currently based at Ipswich allowing radiographers to view real-time images from patients undergoing MRI scans at the ‘remote’ site.
The initiative enhances the existing MRI services by providing an additional 20 hours of after- hours appointments each week, allowing patients to access essential scans more quickly and efficiently.
Since the launch, I-MED has successfully completed over 1,000 remote MRI scans, totalling 400 hours, with Rockhampton being the inaugural clinic in Queensland to connect to the remote network.
The work of I-MED has resulted in an impressive accumulation of 50 additional days of scan time, significantly expediting patient treatment for those who would otherwise face long wait times or be required to travel for necessary imaging services.
Building on the successful pilot programs in Ipswich and Rockhampton, I-MED has expanded its capabilities to include six cockpit locations across Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.
Currently, three of these locations are operational, supporting a total of 12 remote MRI site -three of which are already scanning patients, while the remaining nine are preparing to commence operations.
Introducing remote MRI services addresses a pressing national shortage of radiology professionals, particularly skilled imaging technologists and radiographers in regional areas.
This approach not only enhances local service availability but also offers significant benefits to local radiographers by providing access to training and educational resources that may otherwise be unavailable.
Additionally, the upskilling opportunities afforded by I-MED’s program ensures that the regional workforce is well-equipped to meet community needs.
The service does not seek to replace local service; rather, it aims to extend opportunities and improve access to MRI services for regional communities with continually investing in technology and exploring new ways to enhance the patient experience, as well as the experiences of referrers and other stakeholders.
In line with its commitment to excellence, I-MED has undertaken a significant capital expenditure program focused on technology and capabilities, which includes the remote MRI offering.
I-MED also continues to invest in state-of-the-art clinical equipment, premises, and IT networks, ensuring the highest standards of care for regional patients.
