1. One Big Thing: Applications open for 2024 Charlie Bell Scholarships with Ronald McDonald House Charities SEQ
What’s Happening?
Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland (RMHC SEQ) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Charlie Bell Scholarship, offering $5,000 grants to young people aged 15-20 who have faced illness or injury.
Why It Matters
The scholarship helps students pursue tertiary education or vocational training despite past health challenges.
Sophie Nance, a 2023 Charlie Bell Scholarship recipient (above), was diagnosed with Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome (MPS 6), a rare condition that affected her school performance and daily life.
Despite these challenges, she is now studying for a Bachelor of Social Work at Queensland University of Technology and developing her business, 'Just Be You,' which focuses on clothing for people with Dwarfism.
Who’s The Scholarship For?
For those impacted by childhood illness or injury, financial burdens can hold back academic or career dreams, so this scholarship is a lifeline that helps recipients focus on their future, not their setbacks.
By the Numbers
$5,000: The grant amount per recipient that is offered through the scholarship
15-20: The age range for applicants.
30 Nov 2024: Application deadline.
What They Said
RMHC SEQ Chief Executive Officer Emma Thompson says, “An illness or injury can make life stand still, making any progress – whether it be in your education or career, feel almost impossible. That’s why our scholarship exists.”
What to Look for Next
If you or someone you know qualifies, do not miss this incredible opportunity.
Apply before 30 November at rmhc.org.au.
2. $250M Workforce Villages project launched for Rockhampton Region
Energy Estate and ASA have unveiled a $250M workforce villages project for the Rockhampton and Gracemere region, designed to tackle the pressing housing shortage.
The villages will initially accommodate over 700 workers, with plans to convert the modular homes into 350 permanent residences for the community.
Incorporating sustainable features like renewable energy, green spaces, and electric vehicle charging stations, the project aligns with the region's transition towards a greener future.
Simon Currie, Director of ASA, highlighted the venture as a way to create a lasting housing legacy in Central Queensland, while Mark Hinman, ASA Founder, emphasised their dual approach to meet both immediate and long-term housing demands.
Set to begin operations in 2025, this initiative will provide essential housing solutions and boost local economic growth.
